Helping Kids Memorize Scripture

“These commandments that I give to you are to be upon your hearts.

Impress them on your children

Talk about them when you sit at home, and when you walk along the road,

when you lie down and when you get up.”

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Teaching Scripture to our children is of high importance in our home. We read the bible together, talk about the stories, find verses for certain situations. We constantly looking at our Bible for answers because we believe that’s what we are called to do. Scripture is supposed to be a part of us, not just something we read on occasion. We are to be rooted in the Word so that we can meditate on it day and night (Psalm 1:2).

One of my favorite ways to memorize Scripture is through song. You know how if someone sings a song, you get it stuck in your head all day long? That’s how we want Scripture to be. And by singing songs that come directly from Scripture, kids (and us parents) have the songs in our heads all day long. What a great message to have in stuck in our heads all day!! Way better than Baby Shark.

Tips for Learning Scripture
  • Have a routine for learning new verses. Maybe the morning time works best for your family or maybe bedtime is better. Whatever it is, stick to a routine.
  • Get the whole family involved. When you are driving to worship on Sunday mornings, sing a song that your family has been working on.
  • Don’t forget to say where it’s found in the Bible. That may seem unnecessary but that is the first step to learning where things are found in the Bible. It helps kids be familiar with the books of the Bible. This gives them confidence that they know the Word of God for themselves.
  • Have a “find the Scripture” race. When they have their Bibles with them, take a minute to see who can find that verse the fastest. I’d say winner gets bragging rights, but I’m pretty sure the Bible says not to brag. Let’s say the winner gets a hug, and so does everyone else.
  • Ask your kids about their favorite song that they’ve been learning. And tell them about yours. What a wonderful way to have a meaningful conversation about Scripture that they will remember for years to come!
